Secret Recipe Club - August

Meet Katrina from Baking and Boys!  A mother with a house full of testosterone in the shape of 4 boys and her husband.  I like to think she bakes to help keep her sanity (my words).  How she manages to do it all beats me as I struggle with time management and I don't have any children!  I tip my hat to my blog partner for this month's Secret Recipe Club.

I loved looking through Katrina's blog as it's filled with photos of her beautiful family and little stories of her life.  Of course, it's also filled with yummy recipes, but I couldn't go past this particular recipe as it had my name written all over it....

Classic French Challenge - July

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with all things French.  French pastries being top of the list, however it might surprise you to know that I have only ever made the humble French Éclair once in my life - way, way, way back in Home-ec class.

I'm sure you can imagine how they turned out!

I have loads of French cookbooks (some even in French) and I desperately wish for more hours in the day and days in the week to be able to practice and perfect the technical aspects of French cooking.  So I did a little booty dance on the spot when I discovered that Jen of Blue Kitchen Bakes has the Classic French Challenge.  This is a monthly French cooking challenge, with this month's challenge (hosted by Sarah of Maison Cupcake) being, yep you guessed it....the Éclair!

The Birthday Tart

I don't tend to eat chocolate tarts, and in fact I didn't eat any of this tart, but I've had the recipe for ages and couldn't wait to make it.  I can honestly say it was a pure joy to make.

This is one of those tarts that gives you more bang for your buck.

A "wow" tart with very little effort on your part.

Basically, my kinda tart.

Cake of the Year !

I'm not a baker.

I've never claimed to be great at baking but I absolutely love it.  I love the whole process from beginning to end.  I love that measurements need to be exact.  I love creaming butter and sugar together and creating a light, fluffy batter.  And above all, I love the smell a cake makes when it's cooking in my oven.

So when a cake comes out looking exactly how it should, even better than I expected, and tastes just as good as it looks - well, I'm one very happy girl.  Very happy!

Normandy here I come . . .

I'm getting excited about exploring Normandy.  It was never part of my original plans to go there and in fact, when I think back I don't think I'd have ever planned to go there ever.  I'm not sure why that is, but I just found other areas of France more appealing to me.  Well, thank God all that's changed thanks in large part to reading two particular cookbooks by Jane Webster - My French Table and Family Ties.  I know I've raved on about these books in the past on this little blog of mine, but the stories and pictures make me feel as though I'm already there.  I can smell the country air and taste all of that delicious food.

So, of course, it wasn't long before I NEEDED to make something else from one of these cookbooks, and the winning recipe for the day was.......

Another apology . . .

Sending apologies once again - getting to be a bit of habit isn't it?!

I posted about a great cake I made back in January when I went on a "Plonkers Excursion" around various wineries down Mornington Peninsula way.  Such a brilliant day!

Anyway, the cake I made for our picnic lunch was a very special Rhubarb and Sour Cream Cake (recipe from Seasonal Kitchen by Marie Claire), and the perfect cake for a picnic.  Being quite a dense cake, it held up travelling in the back of a bus with a bunch of very happy and loud (alright, maybe a bit tipsy) people.

One hell of a good cake!

After a lazy morning in my pj's sipping my pot of tea, I rugged up and headed off on a gorgeous long walk, discovering new places I never knew existed, right around the corner from where I live. Who knew I had an amazing community garden just steps away. Filled to the brim with stunning vegetables and flowers. The bees liked it also!

What more could a girl want . . .

I've never been to Normandy.

However, in a couple of months time the above sentence will no longer be true.

I'll be cycling around the local villages, visiting Monet's garden, shopping at the food markets and basically eating all the French food I can get my hands on. I'm salivating as I think about it.

For me, this holiday is all about immersing myself in French life.  I've seen the tourist sights, so now I simply want to wander around and shop at the food markets and then cook with all the amazing produce, and to help get me inspired I've been pouring over all of my French cookbooks. Geez, I've got loads of them!

One in particular is At My French Table by Jane Webster.

The essence of Autumn muffin style .

Autumn has well and truly hit my kitchen and last Saturday the aromas wafting through my home were the pure essence of Autumn.  Baking, cinnamon and apples = deliciousness!

With the long weekend ahead of me, I was in the mood to bake and God help anyone standing in my way!  I wanted to make some munchies to take with me down the coast when we headed to Flinders for the Piers & Pinot Festival, and I knew exactly what I wanted those munchies to be -

A cheats tart....

For the picnic I was heading off to last Saturday night (see here), I had only an hour in which I needed to quickly organise some food, and with a fridge and pantry full, I couldn't bear the thought of picking up 'ready-made' food from the shops, albeit a much easier and quicker option.

No, not me!  I'm a glutton for punishment, and with the minutes ticking by I managed to whip up (and work up a sweat at the same time) some rice paper rolls, a roasted cauliflower and chickpea cous cous salad and these little nectarine tarts....

Ginger Apricot Slice !

The sun was shining through the bedroom window when I woke up and the birds were chirping - such a gorgeous Spring morning here in Melbourne.

Something about this type of weather makes me want to potter in the kitchen and bake.  Nothing too heavy, and my taste buds usually want something fruit based with a fresh zing. Not too much to ask for, especially once I've had my morning coffee.  My problem when I get into the baking mood is that like for most people I'm sure, I tend to want to eat lots of it.  In hindsight (and for the sake of my thighs), I really shouldn't make them but I just can't help myself.

So with some St Germain playing in the background and the doors and windows open, I set to making....

Dedicated to Ms A

Let me tell you about one very special little cake!

It's moist, it's light, and it's oh so good........it's a Coconut and Mint Syrup Cake, of course!

Perfect for packaging up and taking along to a picnic, which is exactly what I did a few weekends ago when I headed down to the Yarra Valley with some friends.

The Cookbook Challenge No. 4: Love

So many choices for this fortnight's theme as there are so many things food things I love including anything French, anything wrapped in pastry - anything that involves the words "High Tea" - and the list goes on and on.

But as I was heading off to watch Shakespeare in the Park's - A Comedy of Errors a few weekends back (as previously mentioned here), which involved a great night out with two of my favourite people in the world, I decided to use the opportunity to dedicate dessert to this crazy little theme called love...

The Cookbook Challenge No. 3: Rice & Noodles - Part 1

Dilemma #1

- Such an easy theme but it really stumped me as I cook a lot with noodles and rice and really wanted to do something a little different.

I spent days searching through my cookbooks for some inspiration when I finally heard the words “rice flour” whispered in my ear. Yay! I found my ‘something a little different’.

Dilemma #2

– What to make with rice flour?
