Grain-Free Tabbouli !

I take the making of my salads and the eating of my salads very seriously.  Just as seriously as I take the making of my daily coffee and the taking of that very first sip.  It's important stuff.  It can make or break my day.

When it comes to tabbouli - It needs to stuffed full of parsley and so full of lemon that it makes my cheeks draw in.  No exceptions.

What I love about this salad.....no grain in sight.

3 recipes to spoil mum . .

No idea how to celebrate and spoil your mum this Mother’s Day?

Perhaps you’re a little like me and dislike buying “material” stuff that you know your mum doesn’t need or want, but because she’s way too polite to tell you so, she will smile, accept it, display it and then allow it to inevitably end up gathering dust.

My favourite way to spoil people in my life is with either an activity – this could be from a yummy meal out, or perhaps a show or visit to a museum, OR it’s from my heart in the form of food.

I personally love someone else cooking for me (rarely happens, I might add….hint hint), so I love to whip something up for others that can be either serve to them in bed with a big cup of tea, eaten with them whilst sitting at a beautifully laid table with napkins and flowers, or package up with a big red bow.

No matter what toots your horn, your mum will love anything you cook for her…trust me!

Raw Cacao + Mousse

French chefs have been cooking with chocolate since the early 17th century, and the delectable dessert “mousse au chocolat” (meaning chocolate foam) seems to have showed up in France around the 18th century.

Now this particular Mousse au Chocolat may not be the traditional French version, and in fact, the French may shrug their louis vuitton shoulders “pfft” me and my mousse, but I simply just don’t care.  I LOVE this version and so does my tummy.

Rose + Le Labo !

Rose.

It can help regulate and balance hormone production throughout the body, and has an aroma that can keep you charged and feeling happy. It promotes circulation, takes care of the heart, reduces blood pressure and can help with asthma, dehydration and various other infections.

So when walking down Elizabeth Street in New York one fine Winter's day, our noses led us to an oasis hidden amongst the metal fire escapes.

COOKBOOK: Eat Right for Your Shape!

Cookbooks, like men, come in and out of your life.  Some excite you at first, but leave you totally underwhelmed within minutes.  Some, those special few, can quite simply change your life.

The new cookbook by Lee Holmes, Eat Right for Your Shape , is just one such book.

This book takes a fresh look at the ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda.  A holistic approach to feeling well, balanced and living in harmony with yourself and your surroundings.  A union of the mind, body, senses and soul to help achieve balance and good health.

Listening !

Full fat organic dairy milk.  Such a simple thing, yet one I found hard to find during my recent holiday in New York.  Just one choice in one market sitting amongst hundreds of varieties of skim, 0% fat, 2% fat, low-fat and long-life.

At first I was a little horrified, then it got me thinking about diets.  About how we've been brought up my our parents and what the experts taught us back then, and even today.  It got me thinking how no one person is the same, and no one body is the same, which then leads to the inevitable conclusion that no diet or way of eating should be the same for everyone.

Coconut Butter !

Coconut Butter.

I'm a "singing from the rafters" convert for this white stuff.

Simply the ground up dried flesh of the coconut made into a fine silky smooth butter, it contains both natural oils from the coconut oil as well as fiber from the flesh.  Though it doesn’t have quite as many uses as coconut oil, it’s still a brilliant addition to my diet, as it is:

  • anti-viral;
  • anti-bacterial;
  • gives me long term energy;
  • keeps my hormones healthy and balanced;

So Frenchy So Chic 2016!

Yesterday I was sporting a beanie and leather gloves, wondering if the feeling in my toes was the beginning of frostbite.  Yesterday I was drinking New York cawfee and listening to Lou Reid.

Today, I'm taking my bare feet and hot sun burnt skin home after a glorious day rolling around in the Melbourne Summer sunshine.  Today I've been sipping on French wine and listing to the beautiful soulful French voices of Brigitte and Lou Doillon.

I'm very easily pleased.  It really doesn't take much at all.

And so another wonderful So Frenchy So Chic festival comes to an end.  And yes, just another wonderful weekend in this little life of mine.  Doesn't get much better.

Hope your weekend was just as beautiful.

Watty and Meg !

I love it when taking a wrong turn turns out to be the best thing.

We did start out with a plan, but that was thrown out the window when over an hour later and with tummies rumbling, we realised we were in completely the wrong area.  Yep, we turned the "other" left.

But then there in the distance (well, across the road) was a glimpse of warmth, cosiness and most importantly....food.   Watty and Meg.  The perfect little bistro for these two hungry little ladies.

Winter Necessities !

Necessities you need during Winter in New York:

  • Beanie - have a problem with "hat hair"... get over it!
  • Gloves - 10 seconds with gloves off whilst snapping a photo is way too long.
  • Camera - Because every turn you take is simply beautiful.

So with beanies, gloves and camera's in hand, Prospect Park (like a little miniature Central Park located in the middle of Park Slope, Brooklyn) was our "studio" for the day.

TRAVEL: New York !

New York.

It's been 4 long years since I last set eyes on this magnificent skyline.

This may be a whirlwind trip (planned just a short time ago over a glass of red one evening - yes, I guess I am that easy) , but with the right travel buddy and being mindfully in the moment every waking second, it's a holiday that feels like it's lasting forever!

The very best kind of holiday.

Baked Figs + Strawberries

It's no secret that I'm a fan of the cookbook Love Bake Nourish by Amber Rose, so when she released her new book Nourish, in collaboration with 2 of her talented friends, I was first in line.

Nourish is not your typical cookbook as it's split into 3 sections.  The first section (I'm being honest) is my favourite as it's filled with gorgeous fresh recipes by Amber.  The other 2 sections cover health and nourishment for the mind, body and soul.  This book gives tips, tricks, solutions and answers for getting your health back into shape, stilling your mind and just simply maintaining a positive and happy outlook.  It's simply stunning.

My Home for the Holidays !

Christmas + the countryside = one very happy girl!

It really is pretty simple.  A house surrounded by bushland (no neighbours please!), Bing Crosby, twinkling Christmas lights and a big bowl of fresh prawns.  That's all it takes to make me forget about the working year that's been, allowing my shoulders to drop and the biggest smile to appear permanently on my face.

This is my perfect Christmas, all wrapped up with a big red bow.

My Christmas Tart !

3 simple words that when said apart, make me smile, but when said together, make me swoon .... Fruit.  Mince.  Tart.

In my old life, these 3 simple little single syllable words would conjure up so many good memories, making me feel comforted, happy and oh so "Christmassy".

Now, having run away from gluten and sugar, these words when said together do (if I'm being honest) bring up a little feeling of deprivation, but more so bring up feelings of sugar highs and slumps, sleepiness and foggy brain.  Not to mention a swollen thyroid!  I’m not one to say “never”, but with the knowledge I now have of how sugar affects my body, I just can’t imaging EVER consuming these little tarts that I once held in such high esteem, again.

Christmas Cake !

Plump, boozy dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts.  All the things I loved in the Christmas cakes of my past.  The denser and the darker the better.  Cake that would (and could) last for months (if I didn't eat it sooner).  And cake that stayed moist without the need for refrigeration.

My body and taste buds may no longer be able to tolerate these sweet fruit cakes of my youth, but I still have a need (and a desperate want) for a boozy, spicy and dense sliver of cake to sit proudly and lovingly alongside my cup of tea on Christmas day.

Avocado + Sweet Potato

December 16, 2015

Do you ever get a food fetish where all you think, dream and eat is a particular food?

I get it ALL the time, and at the moment my fetish is avocado.

I’m eating it like a machine.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner - there’s no stopping me, and my favourite way of eating it is in this most delightfully, fluffy, light and zingy way….

WARNING: Contains Sugar!

I try not to push my sugar beliefs onto those around me.  However, sometimes I find it hard to keep my big mouth shut, but I do like to believe that I rant and rave out of love.

I usually just get an eye roll in return.

So being the wonderful friend that I am, I did bring along a sweet treat loaded with the white stuff to my Annual Christmas Feast last week (see here).   Just four simple ingredients went into this bite sized Christmas treat, which was quickly snapped up by the kids and adults alike.

Packaged up, this would also make a wonderful Christmas gift for those sugar loving friends of yours out there!
