Selenium + Brazil Nuts

Selenium.

The second most important mineral that I need for the health of my thyroid (after Iodine).

Just like vitamin A (see here), it helps our bodies convert the thyroid hormone T4 to T3, giving us usable thyroid hormone.

For those of us with autoimmune thyroid issues, selenium has also been shown to improve the structure of the thyroid gland AND drastically reduce thyroid antibody levels - helping to reverse autoimmune activity - my ultimate goal!

Another one of selenium's most important roles, from a nutrition perspective, is as an antioxidant, working alongside other antioxidants such as vitamins E and C, which are essential for a healthy immune system. Some studies even suggest that a selenium-rich diet can help to protect us against skin cancer, sun damage and age spots.

So how can you get enough selenium?

Fish, seafood, poultry and eggs contain small amounts of selenium, but perhaps the simplest way to improve our selenium intake is to simply eat just one brazil nut each day, as these are the richest food source of selenium.

You can’t get more simple than that!
